What do with oatmeal besides boring and in a bowl?
Let’s face it. Oatmeal is boring. Its taste is pretty blank. Just ask anyone who eats mostly gluten-free. And having it daily doesn’t make it any better. So how the hell do we make oatmeal less boring?
Certainly, you can spruce it up. Oatmeal is great with bananas. Or nuts. Or dried fruit. But that still gets old, fast.
But it’s not worth giving up. Oatmeal has so many health benefits. For gluten-free eaters, it’s a good source of non-bread “filler,” if you will. I’ve also been told oatmeal aides in the production of breast milk. Not yoking.
Alas, oatmeal is here to stay. I eat it almost every morning.
Here are some ways to make oatmeal less boring:
Super sweet bowl
Oatmeal is healthy enough. Making it super sweet definitely makes it less boring. Sweet stuff to put in your oatmeal:
- Banana slices.
- Fresh fruit. Honey.
- Stevia. Cinnamon.
- Dark chocolate.
- Dried fruit.
I like mine with raisins, peanut butter and almonds.
Make your bowl of oatmeal savory. It’s a bit unconventional, but very good. Basically, you can add anything that’s not sweet. I like mine with salt, pepper, chili pepper, oregano and an egg white.
Picking savory oatmeal ingredients is pretty easy. Can you can put it on a pizza or salad? If yes, it’s probably good as a part of savory oatmeal.
This is a combo of sweet and savory. Throw a hunk of peanut butter and jelly right on top. You’ll feel like a kid again.
Add some instant oats to a smoothie. The oats give smoothies an incredible texture. It can take a smoothie from watery to thick like cake batter.
Oatmeal is best in sweet smoothies.
- Banana Oatmeal.
- Cake Batter.
- Peanut Butter.
Pretty much anything without citrus fruits.
Oatmeal-based granola bars are far from boring. What’s more? They’re really convenient.
We made these homemade granola bars before a trip to Lake Tahoe. Served as breakfast, airplane snacks, hiking fuel.
It took me several attempts at getting this recipe right. But now, it’s perfect. And easy. Oatmeal Pancakes.
We make these every weekend. Can’t recommend them enough.
Here are some other ideas on how to make oatmeal less boring. No photos yet.
- Crunchy bowl. (anything to make it less mushy, like granola or something?)
- Cookies. (not that creative, just don’t have any examples yet)
- What else?
