A while back, we changed the name of this newsletter from “Week in Review” to “Best Week Ever”. More click-able, mostly. 🙂

But what happens when it wasn’t the best week ever? What if it was actually such a hard week.

This tragedy (and miracle) is all we can think about.

Hopefully there’s still some goodness and helpful insight inside this email.

And hopefully next week will look and feel a bit more like normal.

This weekend, my parents’ home was destroyed by fire.

Everyone made it out okay (including 2 of 4 pets).

But it was a total loss. Nothing left.

Everyone is asking “how can I help?” Including me.

Now, we have a little platform, and I want to use it to help them rebuild their lives.

But, I’m not comfortable asking you to donate to their GoFundMe.

(I’m hardly comfortable asking you to buy a Vitamix.)

So here’s what we’re going to do.

My parents had none of their photos or video backed up.

All of their photo albums and video tapes are gone.

So I’ve partnered with three cloud-based backup services.

5. More insight

I’ve gone back and forth about this. On one hand, it’s no big deal. Things are things and nobody was physically hurt. It could have been so much worse. And so many people all over the world are dealing with much more difficult circumstances. And for that, I feel grateful. On the other hand, we lost two pets and the home that grew with us for 34 years. And, of course, all the photos and video. And six people living in that house are now homeless. There’s guilt and sadness and anger and all that.

People keep telling both Shalva and I how well we’ve kept calm and grounded and have been so helpful from the moment we got the call. It’s nice to hear because it’s our mindset, too. Okay, this happened, now what? 

Overall, we, Shalva and I are good.

We’ve been at my Aunt’s house where everybody is staying all week. Shalva’s been “the receiving department” for all the Amazon Wishlist deliveries.

Thanks to those who have already reached out. And if you’re new here, these emails aren’t normally this heavy.

This whole thing has been all-consuming, and it felt right to let you know what was going on.
