Lenny Gale
The 8-ounce Starter Kit with Self-Detect Technology are now be available in the US!. Baby food, chopping, smoothie bowls to go, dressings, and spice grinds are just a few of the ways to utilize this add-on. The feedback we hear from Vitamix owners most often is about the challenge with making very small batches. This, my friends, is the answer. Get the 8-ounce container for your Ascent machine today at vitamix.com!
UPDATE July 11, 2018: You can now buy Blending Cups (or Bowls) without a blending base. This assumes you already have a blending base that came with either of the starter kits.
Good things
The 8-ounce container brings small-batch, personal blending uses to full-size Vitamix machines. Not good things
It's currently only compatible with Ascent Series machinesAll things considered
The practical applications for these new 8-ounce containers are limitless. A really great, dishwasher-safe accessory for Vitamix owners with an Ascent Series machine.Notes
Note 1: You can watch Shalva in this YouTube video demonstrating the 8-ounce containers. She runs through several different uses.
Note 2: These 8-ounce containers have Self-Detect technology. This means a couple of things.
1. These containers are only compatible on Ascent Series (review) machines.
2. The Ascent Series’ blender base senses when an 8-ounce container is on it.
3. These containers (and blades) will shut off if they’re bumped or dislodged from the motor base.
Note 3: We get excited about most new Vitamix products. These containers? We’re really, really excited!
Unboxing
We’ll post our unboxing video here once it’s ready. Check back shortly; thanks for your patience. 🙂
Our review of the 8-ounce containers
We first saw the new 8-ounce containers at Vitamix headquarters. After an hour with them, our initial reaction was confirmed.
They’re fabulous.
Not only are they useful, but they solve a problem.
With a full-size Vitamix, how are you supposed to:
- Make fresh baby food.
- Chop half of an onion.
- Make a small green smoothie bowl to go.
- Grind spices.
- Make a small amount of flours.
We get very little negative feedback from Vitamix owners. But when we do, the concern is batch size.
We’re thrilled that the people behind the Vitamix machine made these 8-ounce containers a reality. They’re great.
And finally, they’re here.
7 things we liked about the 8-ounce containers
There’s a lot to like about these little containers. Here are our top seven.
Versatility
We mentioned it already, but these 8-ounce containers allow you to make a lot more with your full size Vitamix. For those times when you want to chop or blend or puree just a little bit, now you can.
Portability
Make a smoothie bowl and take it to go. Make a salad, dress it later. These little “blending bowls” are great on-the-go.
Durability
They’re built to last and built to be spill-proof. We turned it upside down with the lid, no leaks.
Stackability
Organization is important in our house. These 8-ounce cups stack nicely in the fridge or cupboard.
Flexibility
Many of our meals need multiple blends. Now, we don’t need to clean any of the containers until after we’re done eating.
Simplicity
These containers are easy to clean whether you hand-wash or run a dishwasher cycle.
Safety
The Self-Detect technology mitigates concerns over an open blade.
FAQ
Here are some answers to questions you may have:
Can you use the 20oz to-go cup on the 8oz base, so I would not have to purchase both starter packs?
Yes. The blade bases that come with the 8oz and 20oz starter packs are identical. Thus, they are compatible with both the 8oz cups and the 20oz cups. You do not need to purchase both starter packs. You only need to buy the blade base once.
How do I get a single 8-ounce cup or a single 20-ounce cup?
Soon, you’ll be able to purchase “accessory packs.” That’s two cups, no blade base.
What about the 20-ounce cups for S-Series?
Currently, the 20 oz containers that are sold separately, these, are only compatible with the S-Series Personal Blenders.
The blade base from the 8 oz starter kit (two cups, one blade base) will only work with the 20 oz cups with “Self Detect” technology [the one that come as a set (two 20oz cups, one blade base)].
Do the 8oz cups work on the personal adapter blade base for the legacy series?
They fit. 🙂 Although, Vitamix PR will say they don’t for your safety and their legal reasons. Doing so requires you to reach beyond the bucket thingy which defeats the purpose. So if you do it, know you’re taking a risk from a your fingers and ability to make claims on their warranties perspective.
Can you make nut butters in the 8-ounce containers?
you cannot make nut butters in these 8-ounce containers. Why? You generally need to use the tamper to gently push the ingredients into the blades and with these 8-ounce containers, everything is contained. Nowhere to put a tamper. If you’re interested in a small container that can also make nut butters, check out the 32 ounce wet container.
Are the 8-ounce containers with Self-Detect technology only available in the US?
Yes. But they should be available in Canada soon and the UK a bit after that.
Does this fit in the Vitamix 5000 and 5200 series?
Unfortunately, no. Those are legacy machines. For personal blending with a 5200, check out the personal cup adapters.
Will it fit the 750 series?
Unfortunately, no. See above.
Why are the 8-ounce containers only compatible with Ascent Series?
They are designed with safety-first engineering. As such, the 8-ounce containers with Self-Detect technology only work on Ascent Series and do not work on Legacy machines (C-Series or G-Series) or Personal series.
Can I do personal blending if I have a Legacy Vitamix?
Yes. The 20-ounce personal cup adapter (review) is available for sale here at vitamix.com.
Will these containers be available as a package (like from Costco)?
Possibly someday. Although we do hope you buy direct through us. 🙂

If I wanted a second set of blade to keep things separate. Would the S series blade work with the v1200 if I used the self detect bowls.I love the videos btw..

Can you make frozen desserts of any type with the 8 oz bowls… or are you restricted to a less frozen style smoothie bowl due to no tamper use?
Erin Peneueta -
I was wondering if the blade for the 20 oz and the 8 oz cups are interchangeable?
Lenny Gale -
They sure are! 🙂
So all you need is one of the blade bases from either the 8-oz pack or the 20-oz pack (both of which include a blade base plus two containers). Then, once they become available, just grab an accessory pack which includes two containers (and no blade base).
It would appear as though the 20-ounce containers from S-Series machines (cup only, not the blade base) are compatible with the blade base that comes with the Ascent’s 8-ounce starter pack.
If that’s the case, a savvy buy would be to get the 8-ounce pack and a single 20-ounce cup. That way you have it all.
Check back, though, as I confirm this compatibility with my Vitamix people. Thanks.
Replying to my own comment: 20-ounce containers from S-Series are NOT compatible with Ascent. It has to do with the sensor technology (a safety thing) in the Ascent’s personal blending blade base.
For what it’s worth, you’ll be able to purchase starter kits (2 cups and 1 blade base), or just accessory kits (2 cups, no blade base).
The accessory kits (2 cups, no blade base) are now available. You’ll need a blade base that comes in one of the starter kits.
