The best Vitamix hummus recipe (in just a few minutes)
We’ve been making specialty hummus recipes here for a long time. We have recipes for Beet Hummus, Olive Hummus, Thai Curry Hummus, Edamame Hummus, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Jalapeño Cilantro, to name a few.
But traditional hummus? Now’s the time.
Here’s the best traditional hummus you can make in a Vitamix with canned chickpeas. It’s:
- Fluffy
- Flavorful
- Super duper easy
We adapted this hummus recipe is adapted from Rainbow Plant Life’s and Vitamix’s to make it the easiest and most tasty.
Make it! It goes great with homemade falafel and our incredible lentil soup recipe.
And if you want to watch how it’s made, we recently featured it in our 3 Middle Eastern Vitamix Recipes video (at 33:57)
How fluffy do you want your hummus?
You can make your hummus amazingly pillowy and soft by using dried chickpeas and soaking them. You can also get your hummus to be a little fluffier bye boiling your canned chickpeas. (Another trick is to remove the chickpea shells.)
But who has time for that?
In this recipe, we’e using the most efficient trick for getting fluffy hummus: Ice water.
So easy, so good. And so much less costly than store-bought (from a dollars and environment perspective!).
Make it!

Useful tips for Traditional Hummus
The water from the chickpeas is called aquafaba. Save it! It’s an ingredient in our blueberry pancakes (as well as the pumpkin version).
Fresh garlic is best, but you can save some time by using minced (jarred) garlic.
Use more or less ice water to control the consistency. More ice water will make it creamier!

Surprised that you didn’t use any olive oil. Wouldn’t that make the blending easier?

Just going to make your recipe for hummus. You list the chickpea can at 8 ounces. I believe that is a typo…the regular sized cans are around 15.5 ounces
