How to Make Homemade Applesauce That's Easy as Pie (should be)

Last Updated September 29, 2023

Holiday parties usually require you to bring something to the table.

Literally.

You want it to be easy. But, you want it to be impressive.

Here’s your contribution to this winter’s holiday parties:

Homemade Applesauce.

Now, normally I ask you to share our Vegan Vitamix Recipes.

But for this homemade applesauce recipe, I want you to keep it a secret.

Here’s why:

Impress Friends, Loved Ones

Showing up with this applesauce is like a good magic trick.

People are blown-away.

But if they knew how simple it was to create, they’d be much less impressed.

I brought it to a friend’s house last night for a Hanukkah party. It was a huge hit.

Bottom line: People will be in awe of your ability to make homemade applesauce from scratch. Let them stay impressed by hiding how simple it actually was.

But be sure they know this:

Makes Your Kitchen Smell Like Heaven

Sure, this applesauce is mind-blowingly good.

And it’s:

  • Easy.
  • Healthy.
  • Quick.

But it will also make your house smell like you checked in to the North Pole. Apples, cinnamon, and warm saucy goodness.

This applesauce is so amazingly great.

And did I mention it’s free of that stuff in nearly all pre-packaged applesauces? Yup.

Apple sauce served with latkes in background.

If you’re going to make this applesauce, make sure to pair it with our vegan sweet potato latkes and sour cream!

Or if the goal is just to get rid of an apple orchard haul, try these apple cider pops.

  3. Blend on variable speed 5 for 1 minute (less for chunky)

Useful tips for Homemade Applesauce

Be prepared for your house to smell like heaven.

Use honey crisp apples, if possible. They're the best for applesauce.

And, don't laugh at the naked apples. Just peel 'em and move on.

Slice and core. The apple slicer is still, pound for pound, a top five kitchen tool.

Here's one I use.

I grew up with the prepackaged, perfectly consistent applesauce. So 30 seconds on variable speed 5 in my Vitamix did the trick.

Or blend a little less and serve it chunky.

Oh yeah: And here's it as a side dish with latkes!

Apple sauce next to sour cream.

I I’d the raw apple method, then cooked it. I liked the consistency and for a strange reason the taste of method using a food mill after cooking the apples, some with peels on. The peels were more of a nuisance in the food mill, but the outcome was better.

I like applesauce with the peels on too. My kids… not so much 🙂

I only put 4 cups of chopped skinned apples in my vitamix, and it stopped blending before it was pureed, as there’s not enough liquid in the apples to do so. Adding water….

If you use your tamper there should be plenty of volume w/o adding water.

Is it necessary to peel them? Would there be any negative effect if I left the pills on? Thank you

Not necessary to peel at all! Just a different texture (but more beneficial fiber)

Love this recipe. So east. Sometimes I just run it on 10 and cook it that way so it’s really saucy. So easy!

    Hi Sophie,

Thanks for the kind words. 🙂

You can probably keep it in the fridge for up to a week. Maybe try freezing half of it — I’d guess it last in the freezer for several months. 🙂

    Hi Lenny,

Love the website – quick question on how long this sauce would last if it’s just lil’ old me eating all of this?

    Thanks
    Sophie
