Spicy Soy Fish Sauce Story
When you order sushi, you get soy sauce and wasabi. Delicious. Salty and spicy. So, maybe I can create a recipe for wasabi soy sauce. Well, I quickly found that wasabi isn’t very easy to make. Nor does it last very long after it’s prepared. So how about a spicy soy fish sauce that doesn’t use wasabi? Cool.
The tricky part was substituting wasabi. It’s flavorful and complex, yet sort of refreshing. For the spicy, I used hot chili pepper flakes (the kind you would maybe use on pizza). I also tossed in some fresh ground pepper because the spicy flavor needed to be a little more complex. Then, for the refreshing, I threw in some lemon juice.
To finish it out, I added some garlic powder (fresh garlic is cool too) and a little stevia. It’s remarkably easy and quick to throw together. I could have probably made a whole batch and stored it in the fridge for another time.
How Healthy is this Soy Fish Sauce?
Soy sauce on its own isn’t healthy, per se, but you could do a lot worse. It’s basically just salty. The rest of the ingredients are totally good. Lemon juice is good for your metabolism and acid levels (its an alkaline when digested). Stevia is all natural.
Overall, this Soy Fish Sauce recipe is a winner. Easy, healthy and quick.
Save or print the recipe to try it with your next piece of fish. It’s really good with Ahi Tuna.

I substituted soy sauce with tiparos fish sauce . Actually it was an imported brand, called Squid. Then a little hot .paprika spread on for it’s coloring beside it’s peppery flavor .

I didn’t have stevia so I added a pinch of sugar and threw in a couple of small squirts of Sriracha to add another layer of complexity. Fantastic sauce for the tuna.
Thanks.

San-J makes organic soy sauce and tamari. I don’t eat soy but when soy is fermented as in soy sauce, tamari, miso and natto, it becomes healthy. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/soy-health_b_1822466.html

I’m finally using up a “monster-sized” bag of wasabi powder. I bought it 9 years ago.

Great share. Thanks, Chieko.
You could substitute organic tamari for the soy sauce. Healthy, no GMOs, works for the umami thing.
Yeah? I don’t eat soy, but love soy sauce. Never actually made the connection that soy sauce IS soy.
What’s your recommendation for organic tamari, Elizabeth?
I’m going to try Braggs coconut aminos instead of soy. Has anyone tried this?
