A satisfying guilt-free treat
We’ve been fans of nice cream since our Vitamix came into our lives.
It’s easy, it’s healthy, and it tastes just like the real thing!
We love experimenting with flavors like coconut ice cream and pumpkin ice cream.
But there’s something so decadent and satisfying about a creamy scoop of coffee ice cream.
Throw some coffee in the freezer, you’re going to want a dessert pick-me-up!
Don't let extra coffee go to waste
I’m notorious for making a pot of coffee and then drinking a half a cup. So instead of dumping it all down the drain, I’ve been freezing it in ice cube trays.
Why? Because I love iced coffee, and regular ice cubes water it down.
But now we’ve got a freezer full of coffee cubes, and I just can’t use em fast enough.
So why not use the same method as I did with the Coco Lime Sorbet and use those cubes to make ice cream!
We always have frozen bananas on hand for our No Yoke Shakes, so I figured those 2 ingredients would do the trick.
It was absolutely delicious! But it also had the creamiest texture we’ve ever gotten from a nice cream before. It was silky smooth and reminded me of authentic gelato.
So next time you’ve got a little extra coffee, put it in the freezer and whip up this decadent treat.
Look at how creamy this turned out…

Useful tips for Coffee Ice Cream
I’ve got a major sweet tooth, but this ice cream was sweet enough for me without any additions. If you’d like it sweeter, add a date or two (Lenny did to his and it was even better).
If you’re planning to make this as an evening treat, use decaf coffee so you’re not up all night. 🙂
You’ll need to use your tamper. Why? Because there is no liquid, and both ingredients are frozen. [Push from the corners into the blade. It takes a little time to process and your Vitamix may sound like it’s struggling, but don’t worry, it’s not! It can absolutely handle frozen bananas and ice cubes. Just make sure you’re blending on high (so the cooling mechanism kicks in).]
This recipe makes about 4 servings. If you won’t be serving it all, pre-scoop it onto a cookie sheet, and put in the freezer. When you’re ready to serve, leave your scoops on the counter for five minutes and it’s perfect again.

Hello!! Can we mix instant coffee mixed in milk and sugar and set in ice cube trays and freeze them about three ice cube trays. Then add one cup cold coffee in vitamix and the freezed coffee cubes and make vitamix coffee ice cream. Should I first use it on no 3 and then increase speed to highest for around 45 seconds. Kindly help please. Looking forward to hearing from you at the earliest.

That sounds like it might work, yeah! Always start on a low level and then ramp up to 10. Watch the consistency closely, 30 seconds will likely be enough.
Love the texture, but I found the banana flavour overpowering the coffee. Any tips?
Interesting. I don’t personally like banana and I can barely taste it. You could sub one banana for a 1/2 cup of frozen coconut milk. That may work.
Loved it!!!
Yay! So glad, it’s one of my favorites. I’m pregnant again and making this with decaf just so I can get my fix ☕️
We just got the Ascent 2500 and this recipe was among the first made and didn’t work at ALL for us. Followed it exactly, but having 2 frozen items and no liquids did not work. It resulted in an almost granita like texture before the machine started having difficulty with processing the mixture. All other Vitamix ice cream recipes we’ve seen have some sort of liquid to them and we have accomplished successfully and so it doesn’t seem to be the machine. Or maybe if you didn’t freeze the bananas. When we finally added liquid (some more coffee we cooled down) it worked fine.
Hi LN, so happy you started with one of our recipes. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you. I’d say an all-frozen blend is kind of an advanced Vitamix skill. When you’re new, you’re afraid you’ll break the machine. Once you’ve got a good handle on it, you trust what the machine can do.
We’ve made this recipe as-is several times with no problems. The trick is to blend on HIGH and use the tamper to push the ingredients from the corners into the blade. It may sound like you’re Vitamix is struggling, but it can handle this blend!
Try it again and let us know how it goes. It’s one of our favorites 🙂
Hey, this is a silly question, but I am wondering if you have recommendations on what the best sort of ice cube tray for the vitamix would be? I have a pro 750. My main goal is to make smoothies and ice cream. I am admittedly a bit over analytical, but am thinking a lot about what size cube is best and also looking for a covered tray. Thought you may have a recommendation. Thanks!
Not silly at all. In fact we’ve made the mistake of trying to make this exact recipe with our giant rocks ice cubes and it was a fail. We recommend standard size cubes. No specific tray to recommend, but one with a cover is an excellent idea.
Greetings!
Thank you for the recipe. I have a recipe to share for Frappachino:
1-1/2 cups cold espresso
1/2 cup cold milk (any type)
Cinnamon and Agave or honey or sugar to taste
1-1/2 to 2 cups ice cubes
14-15 pulses.
I usually use a different appliance but I think the Vitamix will be fine.
I will try my Vitamix tomorrow. Thank you. Take care…
Thanks for sharing, Laura. Sounds delish!
Yup, this is the best ice cream we’ve ever made with our Vitamix. Not even close.
