New Parents: Lend Out Your Beloved Vitamix

Because the best give you can give new parents is food

Shalva and Lenny about to be new parents in November 2017.

Okay, Baby is coming. At least we’ll have our Vitamix to keep us healthy and grounded, right?

Nope.

There’s a reason there are no Vitamix recipes for new parents.

Let’s talk about why you should lend out your Vitamix if you’re expecting a baby.

But first, for anyone not convinced at the end of this post that they should part with their Vitamix for a couple of months, here’s one myth dispelled.

Myth: Using your Vitamix will wake the baby

Your instinct as new parents is to hush the house when Baby is finally asleep.

Do not wake the baby!

No music. No TV. No talking.

And certainly no high-performance blending.

Now, this may seem irresponsible or reckless or selfish. But here’s the reality: Loud, ambient noise is the best for keeping Baby asleep.

  • Get-togethers
  • Restaurants
  • Vacuuming

And, yes, blending!

So if you don’t end up putting your Vitamix in a foster home, don’t let Baby’s relentless sleep cycles stop you from making yourself green juice.

Instead, accept that the following are the reasons you aren’t using your Vitamix.

The (insurmountable) obstacles to using your Vitamix as first-time parents to a newborn

Two week old baby.

You should procreate.

If you can, you should.

Having a baby is the most awesome, rewarding, and joyous thing you’ll ever get to do.

But wow, is it hard.

Like so-tired-you-could-cry hard.

Like I-need-food-that-feels-like-a-hug hard.

Like can-people-see-how-much-I’m-struggling-right-now hard.

And as a result…

You have no groceries.

Maybe you stocked up before the crying, diaper-filling apocalypse.

But unless you can muster the strength to order groceries for delivery, you’re surviving off frozen food, granola bars, and Grub Hub.

Plus…

You only want to eat challah.

Having a baby physically hurts. And I’m saying this as the father!

Bread, pasta, and pizza, even if temporarily, ease the pain. (This is a scientific fact: Bread triggers a flood of dopamine release and affects your brain like heroin does.)

And more than anything…

You just can’t.

Look, you realize it’s not difficult to make green juice.

But slicing an orange to do so? Grabbing flaxseed from the freezer? Cleaning your Vitamix (even if it takes 30 seconds and zero work)?

You just can’t.

And so now that we’ve discussed why you will not use your Vitamix when you bring home your first baby, let’s try to make the case for you to ship it off to someone who will use it. For themselves, and hopefully, for your benefit, too!

3 reasons your Vitamix should move out (when Baby moves in)

Before you bring home a baby, find a temporary home for “your baby”.

Your Vitamix.

Send it on a two-month vacation.

To be clear, this is not a request to have your parents or neighbor do you a favor. This is a trade-off.

They get an in-home trial run with your Vitamix. And in return, they agree to bring you delicious, nourishing food and drinks.

Here’s why:

1) Soups, smoothies, and juices, delivered

There’s a chance you’ll make four batches of creamy wild rice soup and freeze it for easy reheating. And if that’s you, bravo!

(Note: We did just that. We made enough for an army, froze it, and not sure if we would have survived without it.)

But chances are (assuming you’re not living in Hawaii), you’re going to need a zero-pot, hot dinner in a bowl.

Same story with smoothies and juices.

They’re like those super-fast battery chargers. I’ll never forget standing at the fridge, grabbing a jar of green juice, drinking it all, and going from 3% (physical and mental) battery to 30.

Best part is, with these soups and smoothies and juices, they don’t need to be delivered fresh. Bring them over frozen!

2) Your loss is their gain

This is a wonderful opportunity. Why waste it?

You know you Vitamix is your go-to tool in the kitchen for creating and thriving in this lifestyle.

Don’t you think it could help others just like it helps you?

Now, with it on someone else’s counter, they have no choice!

Sure you’re going to take your Vitamix back when you’re no longer new-parent zombies.

But maybe after watching (and using!) your Vitamix for a bit, they’ll get one of their own. The ultimate passive, aggressive nudge!

3) Its return: Something to look forward to

They say you should always have something to look forward to.

With a new baby, your calendar is empty. Nothing is planned.

You look forward to spontaneous moments of normalcy while Baby is asleep.

  • A hot shower
  • A comforting meal
  • An embrace from your spouse whom you thought might never hold you again

And hopefully, this one, from someone who just experienced it:

A friendly reminder that it gets better.

You’ll turn a corner.

Baby will turn a corner.

And everyone will be ready to do the work to live vibrantly again.

Put it on the calendar.

In two months, the Vitamix comes home.

And everything will be okay again.

Two month old baby.

The following soups and smoothies and juices are great fresh or frozen. Plus, they’re well-received as a generous, thoughtful gift.

  • Cauliflower Soup
  • Creamy Wild Rice Soup
  • Balsamic Butter Nut Squash Soup
  • Roasted Corn and Poblano Pepper Soup
  • Five-Alarm Chili (not a Vitamix recipe, but excellent nonetheless)
  • Everyday Green Juice
  • Carolyne’s Green Smoothie

This is a big list. Start at the top, and take it slowly. You’re about to give the best gift for new parents.

Sorry. Not letting go of my Vitamix. I draw the line there. They can buy their own when QVC has sales. Giving someone my Vitamix would be like giving away my car. Not happening. They would probably kill it.

On bread being like heroin, state your source please. I’ll ask my friend who is a doctor about that one. Probably will give him a good belly laugh. He’s into nutrition and is a heart specialist.
